MAINTAINING A GARDEN
HOW MUCH SUN IS CONSIDERED FULL SUN?
As a New York City garden designer I first take analysis of a site before designing. My recommendation as a garden designer is to first observe how the sun moves through your property during the course of a day. Take notes.
Full sun is considered to be over 6 hours of unobstructed light each day.
Partial sun ranges between 3 and 6 hours, and shade is considered to be less than 3 hours of light each day. Typically, the sunniest areas will be the west and south sides of your home unless shaded by large trees or other buildings. The best way to determine sun levels for the area in question is to check it every hour on a sunny day.
One of my garden design tricks as a professional garden designer is to document the garden via photographs with my iPhone at various times of the day. Having a visual record can sometimes be an effective reference.
LOW MAINTENANCE GARDENING
Whether your garden is a vertical landscape design or an urban landscape design it will require some maintenance. A landscape designer can design a low maintenance garden, but there is no such situation where it could be a no maintenance landscape or no maintenance garden design. Even a concrete slab requires some maintenance as over time it needs cleaning and over time it cracks and therefore will be in need of repair due to the freezing and thawing effects of winter.
If you are looking to have low maintenance gardening, you should choose plants specifically that are low maintenance plants. Ornamental grasses are extremely low-maintenance. A vertical landscape design that is composed of ornamental grasses will survive well in the harsh culture of a roof garden provided it is irrigated properly.
It’s easier than you might think!

Planters made out of porous materials such as a terra cotter planter will need to be watered more often than a plastic container. Plastic and glazed pots are slower to dry out because water doesn't evaporate through these non-porous materials.
